  • Paint Supplier Innovation Awards

Innovating together

The "Paint Supplier Innovation Awards" (PSIA) were brought to life in 2014 by ArcelorMittal to encourage and stimulate creativity in the product offers of the group’s paint and surface treatment suppliers. Through this competition, the Group relies on the innovation work undertaken in partnership with its suppliers to boost efficiency and innovation and to truly stand out from its competitors and from alternative products.

On 8 September 2016, the third edition of the PSIA comprised 25 submissions from seven international companies: Akzo Nobel Industrial Finishes (ANIF), BASF, Beckers, PPG, Procoat, Salchi and Valspar.

At the awards ceremony, three suppliers were recognised for their projects in three specific categories:

  • Aesthetics: BASF for their proposed new aesthetic range for domestic appliances, which would enable ArcelorMittal to expand its Estetic® Casa range with the addition of high-performance products with modern aesthetics,
  • Performance and functionalities: PPG for their proposal updating coating technologies with a solid paint concept and environmentally friendly solutions,
  • Sustainable Development: Valspar for their proposal for the use of renewable raw materials, which fulfils ArcelorMittal’s expectations.

At the ceremony, Yves Koeberlé, Vice-President, European and Global Purchasing Platform, stated: “In our businesses, in which innovation is key, the best ideas are those that are implemented. This is the goal of the Paint Supplier Innovation Awards: to identify good ideas and then develop them in partnership with our paint and surface treatment suppliers.”

Innovation dedicated to increasingly sophisticated coatings

In recent years, the strategy of co-innovation with its suppliers has led ArcelorMittal to develop highly innovative coil- coated steels that enable the group to maintain its leadership and provide its customers with new solutions. These are increasingly sustainable, environmentally friendly products exhibiting aesthetic qualities that are highly valued by customers.

Recent examples of coil-coated steels launched and registered by ArcelorMittal Europe - Flat Products:

  • Estetic® BioAir: first coil-coated steel whose organic coating is derived from bio-sourced resins and which enjoys the best seals of approval in respect of interior air quality with very low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs),
  • Granite® Quartz and Granite® Storm: new coil-coated steels to expand the ArcelorMittal range of products for residential roofing. Their matt and textured finish makes them products of choice for the manufacture of roofing products.

What is coil coating?

Coil coating is a technique for the coating of metals with paint that necessitates various preliminary stages involving steel surface preparation and paint application. Coil-coated steels are widely used in industry (construction, general industry, domestic appliances, etc.) for their technical and aesthetic properties and corrosion-resistance. The steels offered on the market make use of specialist high-tech paints and substrates. Through an ongoing partnership, the "coil coaters" and paint manufacturers develop, optimise and update these products.
