ArcelorMittal Ostrava



Since 2003, ArcelorMittal Ostrava and its predecessor companies have spent about €148 million (3,7 billion CZK) on environmental improvement projects, including:

  • Implementation of  new  fabric filters at Sinter plant North
  • secondary dedusting of Steel plant hall – increasing of dedusting kapacity by 20%
  • Dedusting of limestone ways at steel plant
  • Scull cutting dedusting
  • Moderinization of COB1
  • Planting of trees for decreasing of secondary dust emissions from ways and piles
  • Elimination of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions to enable the utilization of Brown Coal Tar (BCT) in Blast furnaces

  • ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s. operates on both  wastewater treatment plants facilities for recirculating of treated wastewater. In 2011 ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s. recirculated from these wastewater treatment plants 5 790 859 m3 wastewater for reuse.
  • In 2010 - 2011 ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s. reconstructed both pipelines the feeder surface water 12,5 km long. Reconstruction  was carried out using environmentally friendly method, through cementation, without the need for excavations.

In the year 2011 ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s. was recycled 568,980 tons of external scrap and 197,983 tons of internal scrap. In Sinter plant was used 106,000 tons of steel slag and 6600 tons of scales that were previously degreased in low-temperature desorption equipment. Coarse blast furnace sludges from hydrocyclone was recycled 8,700 tons. In blast furnace was used 330,000 tons of blast furnace slag and 144,000 tons of steel slag.

Energy / CO2

All coke oven gas and blast furnace gas is used in the facilities of the company (for example - heating furnaces, rolling mills, hot-blast heating, heating coke oven batteries). Surplus coke oven gas and blast furnace gas is used to produce steam in a subsidiary ArcelorMittal Energy.

Using of COG and BFG minimize consumption of NG and coal (nonrenewable energy sources) and reducing CO2 emissions.

 Planting of 2113 trees in cities and moutains Beskydy in 2007-2010.
