Exterfer and its customers reduce indirect emissions with XCarb® green steel certificates

Exterfer, a steel service centre based in Slovenia, recently purchased XCarb® green steel certificates from ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products. The company intends to use the certificates to reduce indirect emissions in its value chain. At the same time, Exterfer hopes to increase the level of knowledge its customers have about their own carbon footprints.

Uroš Habič, CEO and managing director of Exterfer, explains: “Although we try to be as sustainable as possible in our operations, our carbon footprint is still high because of the products we buy and transform. ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® green steel certificates will allow us to report equivalent reductions in our Scope 3 (indirect) emissions.”

Sustainability resonates with Slovenians

Steel is the basis of around 80 percent of Exterfer’s products. “Until the XCarb® green steel certificates became available, we could only improve our sustainability by optimising our processes and producing as little waste as possible,” says Uroš Habič. “We will continue to do this. But ArcelorMittal Europe’s goal of reducing emissions in steel production, together with the XCarb® green steel certificates, will help us to create a more sustainable future.”

By engaging with ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® initiative, Exterfer will also promote sustainability to the small- and medium-sized companies that are the core of its business. “The certificates will help our customers reduce their own indirect CO2 emissions in the easiest possible way, and with minimal investment,” says Uroš Habič. “We believe this unique opportunity will strengthen our relationship with them and increase cooperation.”

Exterfer employs around 20 people at its plant in Logatec (Slovenia)

It’s an approach that Uroš Habič believes will resonate with Exterfer’s customers: “Slovenia is a country that is full of nature and natural resources. This makes sustainability close to the hearts of all Slovenians. We recognise that being surrounded by nature is a gift. And it is a gift that we want to care for and protect – for us and for future generations.”
