Creating the steel industry of the future

“It all comes down to innovation, improvement, and good people,” says Wim Van Gerven, CEO Business Division North, ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products.

As CEO of ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products' Business Division North, my job is to make our business both economically and environmentally sustainable. But how do we manage what could be seen as competing interests?

The main way we do this is by investing hundreds of millions of euros each year in innovation, and the continuous improvement of our equipment and our people. Through these investments, we are improving our environmental performance and creating an economically sustainable business at the same time.

The new Jet Vapour Deposition (JVD) line we launched in Liège (Belgium) in February 2017 is a perfect example of this approach. JVD is a breakthrough process, not only in terms of production and environmental performance but also for product development, particularly in the field of advanced high strength steels for automotive applications.

How does JVD work? What are the benefits? Find out in this video!

JVD is also the most environmentally friendly coating technology. It has the lowest global warming potential of any industrialised steel coating process.

And any steel coated in our JVD line is fully recyclable at the end of its useful life. For both our industry and automotive customers, JVD answers their need for cost-effective, uniform coatings in low thicknesses.

Capability, not capacity

It’s important to stress that ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products is not increasing capacity with our investment initiatives. For example, in Dunkirk (France) we modernised a blast furnace during 2016 to sustain it for the future. In Gent (Belgium), we invested in the hot strip mill to improve product quality and the capabilities of the plant while reducing our impact on the environment. These projects give us the opportunity to make the steels of the future at these mills, providing supply chain security for our customers, and employment for local people.

Sixty percent of the steels and coatings ArcelorMittal produces today have only been commercialised since 2010. We could not have done this without people who understand the steel industry. And they’re not just in R&D. Products, service, and quality are all created by people who understand the needs of our customers.

Investing in good people

We don’t just hire good people, we also invest in their training and development so they are challenged and remain engaged.

Good people, properly engaged, have good ideas. They help us to create new products, processes, and services which meet the needs of our customers. JetskinTM, Jetgal®, Magnelis®, Fortiform®, our new Usibor® and Ductibor® grades, and Zagnelis® Surface and Zagnelis® Protect coatings are just some of the projects which have been conceived and realised by ArcelorMittal’s people.

There are still challenges ahead, but I’m confident that we are on track to create a truly sustainable steel business. One that continues to innovate and develop state-of-the-art products and services which meet the needs of our global customer base.
