The bridge that crosses the Bay of Izmit has been a part of a 420 kilometer highway project that shortens the distance between Istanbul and Izmir by about 140 kilometers and cutting travel time between Istanbul and Izmir from nine to 3.5 hours.

The bridge was awarded to the consortium NOMAYG (of Turkish companies Nurol, Özaltın, Makyol, Yüksel, Göçay and Italian company Astaldi) who will also operate the bridge for 23 years.

The consortium awarded the bridge construction on EPC basis to IHI Corporation (Japan) and Çimtaş was selected as the sole fabricator of both the suspension bridge’s Orthotropic Steel Deck panels and Steel Tower blocks at one single location in Gemlik – Bursa.

Orthotropic Steel Deck blocks were formed and trial assembled in Çimtaş’s shipyard in Gölcük – Turkey. The design of the bridge was made by Danish engineering design firm Cowi.

ArcelorMittal Galati played an important role in the supply portion of the Izmit Bay Crossing Suspension Bridge -whose official name is announced as Osman Gazi Bridge during inaugration- by supplying Çimtaş with more than half of the quantity of flat steel needed for this big project.

An approximate of 52,000 metric tons of heavy plates were incorporated into the suspension part of the project; of which 18,000 metric tons were for the towers and 34,000 metric tons were for the deck.

The majority of the quantity used for the orthotropic deck of the bridge was supplied by ArcelorMittal Galati to Çimtaş, one of the biggest steel fabricators in the region and one of the biggest in Europe, followed by long and challenging production and shipment cycles. For this project: heavy plate was supplied by ArcelorMittal Galati to Çimtaş as 4 main lots consisting of grades S355J2/J2C+N/N/NL, S420N/NL, S460N/NL with a wide range and variety of thickness and width.

“Our Galati heavy plates mill facilities are capable to produce and deliver the requested plates for various applications but this project has had a special importance for us”,

said Bruno Ribo, Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal Flat Europe, East – South Business Division.

“We have tailored special technical and commercial solutions for this project and we are proud of having been a part of creating this prestigious infrastructure element“,

said Abhijit Sanyal, Chief Marketing Officer of ArcelorMittal Flat Europe, East – South Business Division.

With a total length of 2,682 meters and a main span of 1,550 meters between its steel towers, Osman Gazi Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in Turkey, the second longest in Europe and the fourth longest in the world.

The construction started in 2013 and the bridge was inaugurated on April 21, 2016.

Total length 2,682 m
Width 36 m
Tower Height 252 m
Main span 1,550 m
Navigational Clearance 64 m x 1,000 m
