Europeā€™s sustainable mobility strategy focusses on transitioning the region to use more electrically powered vehicles. To help meet this challenge, Emotors was formed in 2018 to build electric drive units (EDUs) for mobility. A joint venture between automaker Stellantis and Nidec Leroy-Somer, a world leader in electromechanical and electronic drive units, Emotors began producing its first EDUs in October 2022.

The company installs a capacity exceeding 1 million units in 2024 and beyond this number in the years to come. But to achieve this goal, Emotors is relying on ArcelorMittalā€™s new investment in Mardyck (France) which will triple production of electrical steels within the Group.

Over 1 million electric drive units are produced annually at the Emotors plant near Metz (France).

Emotors was established to design, build, and market electric drive units (EDUs) for e-mobility solutions. They can be used in a range of electric vehicle types including battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and fuel cell electric vehicles.

Richard Moore, Head of Materials at Emotors

The company aims to be the best-in-class and has selected iCAReĀ® electrical steels from ArcelorMittal Europe ā€“ Flat Products to help it achieve this goal. Richard Moore, Head of Materials at Emotors explains: ā€œElectrical steels are a critical component when youā€™re trying to build high efficiency engines. ArcelorMittalā€™s electrical steel grades are a major contributor to our success. They have enabled Emotors to achieve the mechanical and electrical characteristics we required for our EDUs.ā€

ā€˜Made in Franceā€™

Another key consideration in the selection of ArcelorMittalā€™s electrical steel offer was Emotorsā€™ commitment to use local suppliers. ā€œLocal-to-local is very important to us,ā€ says Guillaume Bourger, Commodities Purchasing Manager at Emotors. ā€œArcelorMittal is in France, we are in France. This facilitates reactivity, communication, and partnership. It also enables us to apply the ā€˜Made in Franceā€™ label to our EDUs.ā€

The M3 electric motor, using ArcelorMittal electrical steel, will equip many vehicles. For instance, it has already been launched on the DS3 E-Tense, and equips as well the JeepĀ® Avenger, awarded 2023 European car of the year, which makes the company very enthusiastic and proud.

Emotors uses ArcelorMittalā€™s iCAReĀ® electrical steels to create components such as these rotors.
