Auxiliar Conservera, one of the leading European food packaging manufacturers, has consolidated its emissions reduction plan, originally launched in 2015, through partnering with ArcelorMittal to acquire XCarb® green steel certificates for innovative steel packaging solutions. Both companies signed an MoU in 2023 to develop common projects on sustainability, and some of the first collaborations are now being launched commercially.

Daniel Ballesta, CEO Auxiliar Conservera, commented: “ArcelorMittal has become a fundamental ally in our decarbonisation strategy, providing its own deep-seated knowledge and commitment on sustainability. Their XCarb® initiative is a key tool in enabling us to achieve our ambitious targets, and we intend to incorporate it where possible within our wider packaging portfolio.”

Auxiliar Conservera first launched its OpenVac® proprietary canning technology in 2017, employing high vacuum conditions to achieve absolutely airtight seals, with easy-opening and convenience characteristics.

Auxiliar Conservera’s OpenVac® is a game changer, offering their customers really exciting options for the way they present their foods.

For its OpenVac® solution for Nomen Foods’ “Calidad 1 Minuto” rice line, Auxiliar Conservera has developed a steel lid that adapts to the glass jar used by the filler. The jar and steel seal are specially designed to be heated in a microwave for just one minute.

The XCarb® OpenVac® steel lid for Nomen Foods’ “Calidad 1 Minuto” rice line has a carbon footprint 78% lower than the standard OpenVac® steel lid.

“For us OpenVac® is a game changer”, added Daniel Ballesta. “It’s a new way of packaging and preserving food that departs from traditional canning methods and offers our customers really exciting options for the way they present their foods. Our collaboration with ArcelorMittal promises to be a game changer thanks to XCarb® solutions that substantially reduce the carbon impacts of our products.”

Richard Lézé, CMO Packaging, ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products

“XCarb® brings together all of ArcelorMittal’s reduced, low and zero-carbon steel products, processes and technologies, innovation projects, initiatives and alliances in one single-minded effort to make the changes needed to take our business and industry to Net Zero by 2050,” clarifies Richard Lézé, CMO Packaging, ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products. “Through our partnership with Auxiliar Conservera we can bring high-volume, lower carbon steel packaging one step closer. Our steel solutions bring the prospect of much greater circularity for the food packaging industry.”

“Supplying steel from Avilés to Auxiliar Conservera’s Spanish operations fits perfectly with our broader sustainability strategy of localising logistics and supply chains where possible,” concludes Daniel Ballesta.
