Alfun is first XCarb® green steel certificate customer in Czechia

Alfun, one of the largest metal service centres in Czechia, has become the first ArcelorMittal customer in the country to acquire XCarb® green steel certificates from ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products. Alfun will pass the certificates on to customers who want to reduce their Scope 3 emissions.

“We want Alfun to be an innovative and responsible company,” explains Ing. Josef Sklenář, co-owner and purchasing director at Alfun. “ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® green steel certificates are an ideal way to do this. They demonstrate that we are committed to improving our carbon footprint and that real CO2 reductions are being made in our supply chain. That’s why we have enthusiastically embraced this initiative.”

XCarb® green steel certificates reduce Scope 3 emissions

“The carbon footprint of a business is counted at several levels,” notes Hugo Da Gama Campos, sustainable development manager for ArcelorMittal Europe. “Scope 1 emissions are generated by the company from its operations. Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions from purchased electricity. Finally, there are Scope 3 emissions. These include all other indirect emissions that occur in a company’s value chain, including emissions generated by a company’s suppliers. And it is at this level that we support customers such as Alfun with XCarb® green steel certificates.”

XCarb® green steel certificates are not the only way Alfun demonstrates its commitment to protecting the climate. The company has invested in a range of new energy efficient equipment which is expanding the capabilities of the business. Alfun also plans to conduct an external audit to verify its Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.

“A year ago, I would have said that an audit was not particularly important for a company such as ours,” says Josef Sklenář. “After all, our direct (Scope 1) emissions are very low – almost negligible. But now we realise there is a lot we can do to reduce our carbon footprint by tackling Scope 2 and 3 emissions. Understanding those emissions is very important. ArcelorMittal has provided us with advice about what we need to do to accurately measure them.”
