CEO, ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products
Since we first became involved with ResponsibleSteel in 2015, as a company we have played a pivotal role in establishing the steel industry’s first global multi-stakeholder standard and certification initiative. From the outset, we saw the value for customers in having a standard that ensures high ethical and business standards, as well as transparency and trust in our steelmaking processes.
ArcelorMittal Belgium was the first cluster in ArcelorMittal, and globally, to go through the site certification process, and to achieve site certification. ArcelorMittal Belgium (Geel, Genk, Gent and Liège) was quickly followed by Luxembourg (Belval, Differdange and Rodange) and Germany (Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt).
All other ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products sites are aiming to achieve certification within the first quarter of 2022. Crucially, what we have learned, and the experience we have gained during the first audits, is now being passed on to those sites which are going through the certification process. While our standards were already high, the ResponsibleSteel process did identify areas for improvement such as ensuring equality in the workplace, and eliminating harassment and discrimination, for which there are various training programmes in place to address this.
We are particularly proud of the pace with which we have implemented changes as a result of the gaps identified by the ResponsibleSteel process. And as the standards evolve – a revision is planned to include additional requirements for responsible sourcing and greenhouse gas emissions - we intend to continue improving, to ensure we comply with the next generation of standards.
Together with our XCarb® initiative, which brings together all of ArcelorMittal’s reduced, low and zero-carbon products and steelmaking activities, our ResponsibleSteel certifications embody what we want to offer our customers in terms of sustainability. We hope to be able to bring you news of more ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products sites receiving their certification in the coming months and in the meantime, I would like to thank all of our customers who gave their time to be interviewed during the ResponsibleSteel audit processes that have already taken place.
Finally, I hope that you enjoy this edition of our eUpdate client magazine.
