bauma is the world's leading trade fair for construction and mining machinery, the place to exchange ideas with our customers and collaborate on challenges and solutions.

Sustainability was a key theme for the 34th bauma. And electrification trends are leading to lower payloads, necessitating weight reduction in many equipments. In this context, reducing manufacturing costs and time-to-market while improving performances is vital. Equipment manufacturers have to comply with increasingly strict safety regulations, and at the same time ensure durability and easy maintenance. Using the right materials and designs is part of the solution.

Amstrong® in the spotlight

Most of the exchanges with the visitors interested in our flat products were about our Amstrong® and Amstrong® Ultra structural plates, and their “proven performance” as ArcelorMittal’s response to the challenges of our customers.

Amstrong® proven performance: a mix of features of our steel, its quality standards, outstanding dimensional range and availability through our 27 agencies in 21 countries, and our 100 steel service centres and distributors, all supported by the Group’s unique technical and R&D capabilities.

Our coils and sheets ranges from 235 to 960 MPa in strength, up to 2000 mm wide and up to 20 millimetre thickness. These grades allow for strong and efficient designs with significant weight reductions: up to 20% for a dipper arm, 24% for an operator cabin, 40% for hinged tow bars.

“We developed our Strong Master tipper semitrailer which is 600kg lighter than made with a traditional steel grade. A good example of a state-of-the-art tipper that uses ArcelorMittal’s high-strength steel.”

Solutions like Relia® increase lifetimes for wear parts by 3 to 6 times. Fatigue tests of solutions designed with Amstrong® achieve circa 3 times longer lifetimes than the same solution designed with lower strength steel.


Advanced services and innovations

Guaranteed mechanical properties and toughness ensure safety in use. ArcelorMittal's R&D provides comprehensive services to deliver safer designs, including CAD, FEA, prototyping, and welding equipment.

Innovations like stretch levellers in Bremen and Krakow enable production of ultra-high strength and wear-resistant steels with excellent properties. These steels are easy to work with using standard tools. Our service centres offer lead times of up to 24 hours and have advanced processing equipment on-site.


Jan de Moor, Marketing Manager for heavy machinery at ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products highlights that “Our XCarb® recycled and renewably produced Amstrong® steel has a lower CO2e footprint of up to 70% compared to steel procuded via the conventional steelmaking route. Our low carbon-emissions steel is a solution that our customers can rely on here and now to lower their final product’s embodied carbon footprint as well as their company’s scope 3 emissions.”

Looking forward, ArcelorMittal is investing through R&D in the solutions for tomorrow, featuring extreme strength, whilst retaining good formability and delivering increased impact toughness. These steels will be particularly suitable for the demanding applications of wear parts in construction and mining.
