Renault Emblème: A vision for the future of automotive and steel

ArcelorMittal works with Renault on its Emblème low-carbon mobility project

ArcelorMittal is proud to spotlight its contribution to the Renault Emblème concept car – a groundbreaking project recently displayed at the 2025 ChangeNOW Summit in Paris, where Renault Group was the only car manufacturer present.





Designed to embody the future of low-carbon mobility, the Renault Emblème is the result of close collaboration between Renault and key partners like ArcelorMittal. This collaboration is a testament to both companies' commitment to innovation and sustainability, demonstrating how the automotive and steel industries can unite to achieve ambitious decarbonisation goals.

The Renault Emblème demo car, an innovative concept vehicle achieving a 90% CO emissions reduction, was first displayed on the Renault stand at the Paris Motor Show in October 2024 and was also shown at ChangeNOW event in May 2025.

ArcelorMittal is proud to contribute its exclusive steel innovations to this project, alongside other suppliers bringing expertise in various fields.

Key achievements driving this success

1. Reduced weight

One of the critical factors in achieving this drastic reduction in emissions was the body-in-white (BIW) weight reduction of the Renault Emblème. By using advanced high strength steels (AHSS) and press hardenable steels (PHS), ArcelorMittal contributed to reducing weight, leading to a decrease in the overall energy consumption of the vehicle, both in production and use. This net weight reduction of 8% or ca. 40kg results in significant CO emissions savings over the vehicle’s life cycle.

2. XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel solutions

ArcelorMittal’s XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel grades played a key role in the Emblème’s design, aligning with Renault’s decarbonisation objectives. These grades are produced using a high proportion of recycled content and renewable electricity, reducing CO₂ emissions compared to conventional steelmaking by as much as 69%. These steel grades, already available for serial deliveries, enable the reduction of emissions in steel production while maximising the use of recycled materials.



3. Future low carbon-emissions steel solutions with DRI-EAF based processes

ArcelorMittal is dedicated to continuously innovate towards net-zero steel. Future steel products will play a crucial role in reducing emissions even further. The development of these low carbon-emissions steel solutions is part of ArcelorMittal’s ongoing commitment to achieving net zero by 2050.



4. Maximising recycling of steel

Another significant achievement in the Renault Emblème project is the maximisation of recycled content in the vehicle. ArcelorMittal helped achieve a 54% recycled steel input in the BIW of the Renault Emblème (according to ISO14021:2016), an important step in the circular economy.

Achieving a 69% CO₂ reduction by 2030-2040

The progress made by Renault and ArcelorMittal towards the goal of decarbonising the automotive industry is clear. As part of the Renault Emblème project, a 69% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to Renault’s recent reference BIW has been achieved. This is a major milestone in the push towards net-zero mobility.

Renault calls its Emblème concept car a ‘Renaulutionary’ step toward decarbonisation, and ArcelorMittal is proud to be the partner steelmaker contributing to this project, alongside many other suppliers who have contributed in other fields.
