Life cycle assessments (LCA) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are powerful tools which ArcelorMittal uses to communicate about the environmental performance of our steel products. They also help us to design new products with lower emissions and a better environmental footprint.

First introduced more than a decade ago, EPDs have become a key way for steel users to assess the environmental profile of the products they use. As they contain comprehensive and standardised information on key environmental indicators, EPDs can also be used to compare the environmental performance of different products.

Our EPDs are independently verified by the Institute of Building and Environment (IBU)
and globally recognised as part of ECO-platform

Today, ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products can provide EPDs for six product categories that are manufactured via the blast furnace route. These products are eligible for XCarb® green steel certificates.

We are also building our portfolio of EPDs for our XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steels. These products are manufactured in an electric arc furnace (EAF) using high levels of scrap and 100-percent renewable electricity. To date we have developed EPDs for three XCarb® recycled and renewably produced product families: Magnelis®; hot rolled coils; and our Granite® and Estetic® ranges of organic coated steels.

An LCA of our XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel grades shows that their global warming potential is reduced by between 60 and 75 percent compared to steels produced via the blast furnace route. This is a significant reduction, and customers are keen to reflect this in their own product EPDs.

ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products is working as quickly as possible to develop EPDs for our entire XCarb® recycled and renewably produced portfolio. The addition of new personnel will speed up this process and we expect many more EPDs for these products will be released during 2023. This work is vital as individual countries – and industries such as construction – gradually move from voluntary use of EPDs to mandatory provision of these certificates.
