Drawn & Ironed tinplate beverage can with 0.18 mm lower starting gauge
ArcelorMittal innovation is driven by performance and economics. Thanks to steel’s unique strength and resilience properties, steel cans are getting thinner and lighter while maintaining can integrity.
A 40% weight reduction was achieved in the last 30 years and there is still a 20% potential to be exploited.
A steel beverage can mid-wall thickness can be reduced down to 57 µm (50% thinner than a hair!) without putting at risk the mechanical resistance of the can – no other metallic material is able to reach such a performance. 0.18 mm beverage cans have been successfully produced in our labs and 2017 will be the year for its industrialisation, will be on the market soon!
ArcelorMittal R&D expertise provides all the technical support needed for steel solution implementation:
Lighter cans bring a direct impact in economics preserving performance and quality
Lighter cans bring a positive impact on the planet: Sustainability is key for any material, but steel being magnetic, is the easiest and most economical material to sort. Each ton of recycled steel saves:
