ArcelorMittal’s Global R&D teams continued their innovating work in 2022 with the goal of expanding our portfolio of smart steel solutions. These efforts have resulted in a range of new steels and solutions which are helping our customers create more sustainable applications.

In automotive, a key area of study has been the battery packs of EVs which protect the battery – and vehicle occupants – in the event of a crash. Our latest S-in motion® study demonstrated how ArcelorMittal’s advanced high strength steels (AHSS) can be deployed to make the battery pack of B-segment vehicles safe.

In 2022, ArcelorMittal Tailored Blanks and Global R&D introduced ArcelorMittal Multi Part Integration™ (MPI) to the market. MPI helps carmakers to dramatically simplify vehicle production and offers important weight, cost, and productivity savings while reducing emissions.

ArcelorMittal also enhanced our electrical steel offer significantly during 2022 with introduction of new grades in the iCARe® Save and iCARe® 420 Save families. ArcelorMittal Europe also announced the development of a new electrical steel production site at Mardyck (France) which will complement our existing facility in St-Chély and enhance the availability of our offer.

To support the world’s transition to cleaner sources of energy, ArcelorMittal has combined our Magnelis® coating with HyPer® high strength steels. Magnelis® protects the underlying steel from corrosion, while HyPer® offers the high strength needed to create lightweight photovoltaic structures.

In packaging, ArcelorMittal continued to respond to evolving health and safety regulations with the full industrialisation of chromium-free passivation for tinplate. We have also commercialised our new BPA-NI pre-lacquered steel for aerosol mounting cups which eliminates BPA. This development was recognised with an award from ADF.

Yellow and green goods are another important segment that has benefitted from ArcelorMittal’s R&D efforts in 2022. Our Amstrong® and Amstrong® Ultra families of AHSS have been extended, allowing customers to lightweight their equipment, increase payload, and reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

In addition to our XCarb® green steel certificates, ArcelorMittal Europe can now offer the first XCarb® recycled and renewably produced (RRP) steels. They are produced using a high level of recycled content and 100% green electricity, and can reduce the global warming potential of steel by up to 75%.

This is just a quick snapshot of the innovations ArcelorMittal Europe has commercialised in 2022. Many more are in the pipeline, ensuring that our offer will continue to adapt to the requirements of our customers, the environment, and society.
