The March 2021 launch of XCarb marked a historic moment for ArcelorMittal Europe, which is at the vanguard of the group’s ambitious decarbonisation plans.

There is a lot of work underway within the company, and with our many partners, to accelerate the transition to carbon-neutral steelmaking. XCarb will ultimately bring together all of ArcelorMittal’s reduced, low and zero-carbon products and steelmaking activities, as well as wider initiatives and green innovation projects, into a single effort focused on achieving demonstrable progress towards carbon-neutral steel.

For our ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products customers, XCarb green steel certificates are the most significant part of the XCarb story.

The certificates help customers to reduce their Scope 3 emissions, the indirect emissions from sources outside a company’s control. The reception since the launch has been very positive, with customers buying green steel certificates from a range of countries and industries.

I am very proud of the work done by the many teams involved in developing the technology and running the installations that are already contributing to reduced CO2 emissions which, in turn, are translated into green steel certificates that customers can buy alongside their order of physical steel.

In 2021, around 120,000 tonnes of certificates will be available. Reflecting our pragmatic approach to decarbonisation, we are achieving the initial CO2 savings using proven technologies such as replacing the use of coal with the injection of hydrogen-rich gases into the blast furnace.

In parallel, we are moving ahead with the construction of ground-breaking projects. Our Carbalyst project in Gent will capture waste gases and biologically convert them into recycled carbon ethanol.

Technologies such as this mean that we expect to offer 600,000 tonnes-worth of green steel certificates in 2022. The number will continue to rise as new technologies come onstream.

In addition, we have also launched XCarb recycled and renewably produced, which applies to products made via the Electric Arc Furnace route, using scrap steel and 100% renewable energy. This means they can have a very low CO2 footprint, of around 300 kg per tonne of finished steel, when the metallics are 100% scrap.

With XCarb, we want to show our leadership and commitment to carbon-neutral steelmaking, while also ensuring that zero-carbon steelmaking has a home in Europe for the long term.

I hope that you will support us in this journey.
