2020 and 2021 will go down in economic history as two of the strangest years that European businesses have faced in recent memory. The spectre of a downturn in the economy saw many companies start 2020 cautiously and with little prospect for strong growth. Then came COVID-19 and an unprecedented series of lockdowns which disrupted economies, businesses, and consumer behaviour.

Fast forward to mid-2021. Businesses and consumers have adapted to the changed marketplace and the widespread rollout of vaccines has tempered the impact of COVID-19 on the economy in many markets. But as lockdowns eased and economies restarted, up- and downstream stocks were almost completely empty. This resulted in an unprecedented supply/demand imbalance around the globe.

At the same time, the trend to home working and a boom in e-commerce have created significant demand for home appliances, more warehouses, racking systems…

For our part, ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products is ready to help customers ride the post-COVID surge, unlike importers who largely abandoned their customers when the going got tough. ArcelorMittal has rapidly brought back capacities that were slowed during the first lockdowns, and we are getting our service levels back to normal.

The launch of our XCarb® green steel certificates has been met with genuine interest by the market.

Against this background, we also continued our journey to net-zero steelmaking. The launch of our XCarb® green steel certificates has been met with genuine interest by the market. Many certificates have already been issued to customers from different sectors and regions, and interest is increasing daily. To find out why, take a look at our XCarb® testimonials here.

ArcelorMittal Sestao will become the world’s first full-scale zero carbon-emissions steel plant.

As part of our journey to net-zero, ArcelorMittal has announced that our plant in Sestao (Spain) will become the world’s first full-scale zero carbon-emissions steel plant. By 2025, the plant will produce 1.6 million tonnes of zero carbon-emissions flat steel products for the automotive and construction sectors, and general industry. It will make ArcelorMittal the first steelmaker in the world to offer its customers meaningful volumes of zero carbon-emissions steel.

It might seem early to be making predictions for next year, but I am confident that the hectic dynamics of 2021 will normalise, and that demand will remain healthy into 2022. Continued restocking and the massive stimulus programmes to combat the economic impact of COVID-19 will also gradually add growth, most notably to the construction and renewable energy sectors.

ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products stands ready to support you – our customers – at every step.
